DirTracker.com - Phase 3

After building DirTracker.com, it was easy to see not many people would be interested. Only those willing to take their time manually submitting their sites and those who are technical enough to set up the required props for the site may have found real use out of it.

So instead of just giving up on the site itself, I decided I'm going to tweak it up a bit. I'll delete the list of 2400+ directories I extracted and will add those only using RipenApples.com payment system mod with the auto-loader feature. Those willing to use the auto-loading feature will then be able to have a nice compiled list of authorized directories. As for directory tracking, it will still be optional to members only. However, non-members would be able to view the entire list, but not keep track of the ones submitted to.

I also plan on giving DirTracker.com a new look. I think this time around, my design will be a bit better. So stayed tuned and please visit us again when were done!

Adding a Simple Random Image Displayer

After working my first directory, RipenApples.com, I wrote a quick little tutorial that I picked up on the way.

You can find this small quick phpLD tutorial here, http://www.ripenapples.com/random-image-phpld.php

Use it anyway you wish. It can be good for random displaying headers (this is especially good if your already using a non-unique free template) or perhaps any kind of banner ads your directory displays.

For web applications: Perl or PHP?

Theres no correct choice. The choice is yours.

Both are interpreted programs. This means both uses a interpreter to parse each line 1 by 1 and dynamically display it "on the fly".

Choose which ever language that best suits you. Each languages has its advantages and disadvantages. It seems today the popular choice is PHP. The only real experience I had with PHP was hacking up osCommerce. The only real benefit I found is the differences in editing your application. If you only know HTML and wish to learn a language, PHP may appeal to you much more since the HTML is on the same page as the coding. This can make it a bit more easier to follow your application and edit it freely. However, for more technical individuals, Perl may appeal to you because the HTML is usually not part of the scripts. I find this a real advantage. Hacking a well designed and developed PERL script is much easier then hacking a large php application (osCommerce). Thats my small take...and I'm sure both are powerful languages when it comes to building web applications.

Some may then ask.....Which one is more secure?

Again, they're both interpreted languages right? Both can be just as secure as long as you the programmer can make it that way. How secure a web application is depends on how well you know security holes and if you can program your scripts to prevent them. So the answer to this question is neither language is more or less secure then the other since it depends on the programmer.

Now...what about....Isn't PHP faster since its not CGI?

Perl can run just as smooth if you were to install and use mod_perl with Apache to execute your scripts. This allows PERL to be executed directly by Apache, which can then make it just as fast as PHP.

In the end, my Recommendation:
Choose which one best interests you....both are powerful and both can get the job done when it comes to building web applications.

dirtracker -- Phase 2

Hi all,

I added a detailed directory submission tip about how to use InFormEnter for your directory progress. It can be found at:
InFormEnter directory submission tutorial

However, the RoBoForm program is 10x better and will reduce all the clicking involved with InFormEnter.

If my site is used right, it can be just as good as this tool:
http://www.submitsuite.com/products/website-submitter.htm

If you go to that site and check out that tool, you will notice my site (dirtracker) can do pretty much the same if you do it right. It'll be a cheaper way then purchasing a license for a software you have to download.

It's amazing, at DP forums submitsuite.com's software received about 400+ post and 10,000+ views. Most were good reviews and praising on the software, when in reality, my web site can just be as good if done right with RoboForm. Yes it will require a little bit of extra knowledge, but nothing a webmaster or directory submission service will have trouble with.

Basically there submission software is a web browser. This web browser in their app, has a list of directories you can check off and go to submit. It will go to the add link page, and there program (which will act like RoboForm) automatically types in each directory submission field for you. The user will be required to choose the proper category and type in a captcha code if needed.

Dirtracker, on the other hand is a web site viewed by a web browser. If used with Firefox, you will notice my site with RoboForm will offer the same main features as submitsuite's web sumbitter. My site will have a upper frame listing directories for you to click and choose, and once you find your proper category or click on the add link url, RoboForm will automatically fill in each directory submission field.

As you can see, theres really no real benefit in having to purchase a paid software, then to use my free site. As long as you know what your doing, then my site will be just as good as their paid software.

Cheers

dirtracker.com - A New Directory Submission Tool

On a Saturday Morning, March 3rd at 1:30 AM, I decided to officially launch my new directory submission tool.

www.dirtracker.com

I advise any webmasters to remember it, because this tool will most likely be the only tool you'll ever need to do your directory submissions.

Its surprising how there are no sites out there like this and the directory business has been lasting this long. However, there were tools similar to the application I just built. But those tools required you to download and install and some of them are very bug prone. Oh and...those tools are not free of charge.

I'm looking to expand on this idea perhaps...especially if I see lots of good feedback and usage.

Any directory owners, please add your directory to our ever growing database of directories.

Ever wonder how manual directory submission services try to save as much time as possible when submitting for their clients?
Soon I'll be adding a more detailed directory submission tips on what will make my new directory submission tool very powerful and just as good as the directory submission tools services purchase. Manually submitting your web site(s) to thousands of directories will only require clicks...hardly no typing required. In fact, you'll probably only have to type for 2 minutes once you gather the data you will be using when submitting to directories. The rest will just be clicking.

Basically this is the tip
InFormEnter
This is a Mozilla FireFox Plug-in that will save any form values you have typed. It allows you to click on any field and it will automatically type in the text for you.

And if you don't have FireFox, well then...what are you waiting for? All webmasters need FireFox! And if you don't..then I must say your not a true webmaster! If that's the case, find a program like RoboForm.

For those with FireFox, it should be easy to figure out how to use it. Once you learned how to use it, you will understand what I mean by submitting to thousand of directories will only require typing once and then the rest will just be click, click, click.

Any feedback and suggestions for my new tool will be gladly taken!

Cheers,
